Trumpeter Farnell Newton is one of the most versatile musicians & music educators in the Northwest, playing straight ahead jazz, smooth jazz, Latin music, soul, hip hop, funk, and more. After spending many years teaching (privately, with Portland State University’s Jazz Department, and as a leader of the youth group PDX Jazz Project) his current focus is on facilitating Jam of the Week (Jam of the Week is a social media group that bridges the gap between jazz and technology), touring, and recording. In the last few years, Farnell has been touring with three-time Grammy winning singer/songwriter Jill Scott, legendary rhinestone rockstar bassist Bootsy Collins and critically acclaimed soul newcomer vocalist/pianist Jarrod Lawson. In addition to his regular touring, Farnell has also recently shared the stage with musicians including Dumpstaphunk, Skerik, Liv Warfield, Slightly Stoopid, Karl Denson, Galactic, Nigel Hall, sax man Mike Phillips, and the DooDooFunk All-Stars. These appearances are now added to his past experience performing with great musical artists like Lalah Hathaway, Ron Isley, R. Kelly, Cee Lo Green, Fantasia, Gladys Knight, Charlie Wilson, Chaka Khan, Najee, Will Downing, Stevie Wonder, and Earth, Wind and Fire.
